Accessibility

We want everyone to be able to read this site, choose a lure and order it, whatever device or assistive technology they use. This page says what we have done and how to tell us where it falls short.

The standard we aim for

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. We have built the site with that target throughout and check it against those criteria when we change it. We do not claim a formal audit; we claim the work below, which you can verify.

What is in place

  • Structure. Every page has exactly one main heading, a logical heading order beneath it, landmark regions for the header, navigation, main content and footer, and a skip link that jumps straight to the content.
  • Keyboard. Everything that can be clicked can be reached and operated with the Tab and Enter keys, including the mobile menu, the lure filter buttons and the expanding questions on the FAQ page. The current focus is always visible as a thick outline.
  • Contrast. Text and background colours are chosen to meet the AA contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for body text, on both the dark and the light sections of the site.
  • Images. Every photograph has a written description that says what is in it, so that a screen reader conveys the lure, not just the word "image".
  • Text. Sizes are set relative to your browser's default and scale when you zoom, and the layout reflows on narrow screens without horizontal scrolling. Line lengths are kept short enough to read comfortably.
  • Motion. The few transitions on the site are switched off automatically if your operating system is set to reduce motion. Nothing flashes, autoplays or moves on its own.
  • No time limits, no pop-ups. Nothing on the site expires, interrupts you or asks you to dismiss it.
  • Works without JavaScript. Every page is complete static HTML. Scripts only add conveniences such as the mobile menu; if they do not run, every link, every lure and every piece of information is still there.
  • Ordering by email. Placing an order means writing an ordinary email in whatever program you already use, with whatever assistive technology you already use with it. There is no form to fight with.

Known limitations

Some of the lure photographs are detailed, and a written description can only summarise them; if you would like a fuller description of any lure, email us and we will write one for you. The expanding questions on the FAQ page use the browser's native expand-and-collapse element, which some older screen readers announce inconsistently; every answer is still readable in the page.

Tell us what is wrong

If any part of this site is hard or impossible for you to use, please write to admin@hookefamily.com and say what happened, which page, and what browser or assistive technology you were using. We reply within one business day, and fixing an accessibility problem goes ahead of other work on the site.
