How to fish it
The Ribbontail is a soft plastic worm: a slim body with a thin, curled tail that flutters at the slightest movement. It comes unrigged, in a pack of eight, and you fish it on your own hook. Because it is soft and salted, a fish that picks it up tends to hold on, which gives you time to set the hook. It is the most forgiving lure in the range and the one to reach for when fish are pressured or the bite is slow.
Texas rig. A bullet weight on the line, then an offset worm hook with the point buried back into the body. Weedless, and the standard way to fish it through cover. Cast, let it sink to the bottom on a slack line, then lift the rod tip slowly and let it fall again. Most bites come on the fall; watch the line where it enters the water and set the hook when it twitches or moves sideways.
Weightless. The same offset hook, no weight. The worm sinks slowly with the tail working the whole way down. This is the presentation for shallow, clear water and for fish you can see. Twitch it, let it sink, twitch again.
Jig head. Thread it straight onto a light jig head and swim it or hop it along the bottom. The simplest rig and a good one for open water and for smaller species.
Slow down, then slow down more. A worm is fished by feel. After each movement, wait. If you think you are fishing it slowly enough, halve the speed. Bites feel like a tick, a slight weight, or the line simply going slack; when in doubt, set the hook.
Colour. Green pumpkin with red flake is a natural colour that works in almost all water clarities; the flake catches light in clear water and the dark base holds a silhouette in stained water.

A medium-power rod with a fast tip to feel the bites and set the hook, a 2500-size spinning reel, and 8 to 12 lb fluorocarbon, or braid with a fluorocarbon leader for sensitivity. Full detail in the rod, reel and line guide.
Care
Keep the worms in their pack, flat, out of the sun; heat and other plastics can soften and mark them. A worm torn by a fish can be trimmed and re-rigged. Used soft plastics should go in the bin, not the water.
